13th International Don Quichotte Cartoon Contest’2022
Theme: Young/Brain Drain
“Brain Drain” is an ongoing issue for years, but also a problem. We want to update it a little more by adding the word “Young” to the brain drain. Developed countries are trying to get hold of the brain power required to implement projects in the fields of technology, industry and science, through brain drain from underdeveloped or developing countries. As for why we have added “Young” to the beginning of our title; talented and foreign language-speaking young people are more preferred. At this point, two questions come to mind: – Why do these young people prefer other countries instead of staying in their own country, being useful and building a future? – Why the countries receiving brain drain do not try to make up for this deficiency in their own countries, but receive emigration from abroad? Young minds, no matter how talented they are, have trouble finding employment in their home country and see abroad as a savior. Professions such as doctors, engineers and software developers have come to the fore in recent migration from countries at war and the Middle East. Developed countries can employ these young people for cheaper wages than experienced personnel. Of course, it is not easy for young people to break away from their environment, but the issue of future is much more important to them than sentimentality. There is also the “Hidden Brain Drain”. It consists of young people who stay in their own countries and serve foreign capital. Their bodies are in their own country, but their minds serve foreign countries. Among the countries that receive the most brain drain and have high job standards; Norway, Sweden, USA, Canada and Australia. These countries are followed by Switzerland, England, Germany and Ireland. India, China, Türkiye, Balkan and Middle Eastern countries are among the countries that give the most brain drain. Türkiye is one of the leading countries in the “Young” Brain Drain. In 2019 alone, 330,289 people immigrated abroad. 50,151 of the immigrants are young people between the ages of 25-29. Our expectation from you, cartoonist friends; Questioning and scrutinizing the “Young” Brain Drain with your lines. We may not be able to change the world, but at least we can try it on paper (or tablet). So what do you think?

12. International Don Quichotte Karikaturenwettbewerb’2022
Thema: “Jugend/Brain Drain”
Was meinst Du?!.

12th DON QUICHOTTE INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST’2020
THEME: “NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!
(ORG: DON QUICHOTTE&ISTANBUL DÜŞÜNCE ve EĞİTİM DERNEĞİ)

12th International Don Quichotte Cartoon Contest “No to Violence Against Women!” This project is the scream of women from A to Z. It is the rebellion of women to the male dominant world. With Gaye Donay, Competition Partner, President of Istanbul Thought and Education Association; Sedef Tenim, International Communications Consultant; Elif Özer, Technical Assistant; all Members of the Pre-selection Committee and the Main Selection Committee consis of women. Our goal is to stop violence against women all over the world, to defend women’s rights and gender equality. 394 cartoonists from 62 countries have participated in our contest with a total of 1.040 cartoons. Pre-Selection Committee members, Farzana Vizier Tabor (Iran), Shirin Gholipo (Iran) and Asli Alpar (Turkey) have identified the 100 finalists out of 1.040 cartoons, with thorough examinations. The most important point in the qualifications is as follows: It’s been decided to give priority to the works that oppose violence, defend women’s rights and reflect the image of strong women, not violence against women. Our second announcement, a month before the competition’s end, has brought the related cartoons in. As a new application in our competiton, we have closed the signatures of the illustrators and numbered them. Because, in many competitions, we see that the selection committee members reward signatures rather than humor and art. We want to change this biased attitude. Yet, it’s also true that our selection committee as the are active artists of the cartoon world, would be able to guess the names though the styles, we would have at least prevented the signature to affect their initial decisions.

12. DON QUICHOTTE ULUSLARARASI KARİKATÜR YARIŞMASI’ 2020
KONU: “KADINA YÖNELİK ŞİDDETE HAYIR!”
(ORG: DON QUICHOTTE&ISTANBUL DÜŞÜNCE ve EĞİTİM DERNEĞİ)
Ödül Kazanan Karikatürler Belirlendi
12. Uluslararası Don Quichotte Karikatür Yarışması “Kadına Yönelik Şiddete Hayır de!” projesi A’dan Z’ye dünya kadınlarının çığlığıdır.

PARTICIPATION LIST (A-Z)

12th INTERNATIONAL DON QUICHOTTE CARTOON CONTEST’2020
Theme: Say NO to "violence against Women!"
We are taking on another global societal issue after covering child marriages. “Violence against Women” will be the theme of 12th Don Quichotte Caricature Contest.Violenst against women and childs is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. Some national studies show that up to 70% of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner. To raise awareness and trigger action to end this global scourge, the UNobserves International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November.Unfortunately, violence against women and girls is deep-rooted in our societies and the international observance serves as a symbol of resistance as well as a call to action to eliminate gendered physical, economic and psychological violence. Violence against Women has been increasing in emerging countries. Femicide-killing women because of their gender-is a longstanding issue in the world. For example, there were 430 female homicides in 2019 alone in Turkey. Although illegal, child marriage in Turkey remains also prevalent along with countries such as India, Iran, Mexico, Ethiopia, Chad and Niger. The purpose of this contest is to bring global awareness to this issue through the lens of caricaturists around the world and encourage solutions that will end this social crisis.

12. INTERNATIONALER DON QUICHOTTE KARIKATURENWETTBEWERB’2020

1st INTERNATIONAL “ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES” CARTOON CONTEST’2018
Subject: “Planet Calling SOS!”
Long before the dawn of the ecological movement in the 1970s, there were already many committed people and groups throughout the world concerned with the relationship between mankind and nature. They were worried about the dismissive way humans were handling nature and they reasoned about the consequences of this behaviour.
What has happened since then? Topics such as climate change, global warming, soil contamination, microplastics floating in the oceans, species extinction etc. are ever-present in our media and by now, everybody should at least have heard about those issues. Unfortunately, little has changed in the behaviours, neither of the individuals nor of societies. How come?
As early as 1972, the Club of Rome, an organisation of individuals who share a common concern for the future of humanity and strive to make a difference, predicted that if there was no awakening, the existing economical system would inescapably lead to a global ecological and economical collapse. They explained that causes and effects of human activities were often set wide apart in terms of time and space. Hence many can’t (or don’t want to) see the impact of their behaviour and simply deny responsibility.
This can’t go on any longer. Our planet is sending an “SOS”, making an emergency call. The Earth is in a critical situation and mankind is at a turning point. For instance, provided that all imaginable measures and precautions were taken, the ozone layer would still need at least 10 years to renew itself. If we are to believe recent research, the world population is expected to be 9 billion in 2050! If we fail to consume our energy and natural resources in a conscious and responsible way, sooner or later, life on our planet will become impossible.
Hence we are now calling upon all caricaturists in the world: Let’s draw our lines and warn the ones who can’t see the oncoming dangers! Let’s save our planet!

1. INTERNATIONALER “UMWELTPROBLEME” KARIKATURENWETTBEWERB’2018
Thema: "Der Planet ruft SOS!"

10th INTERNATIONAL DON QUICHOTTE CARTOON CONTEST / 2017
Theme: “Respect differences!“
Societies differ based on their language, religion and racial features. These features create the basics of the “differences” description. In such terms, we may not talk about equality since every body has a different color. Amongst crowds, these concepts are unfortunately referred as discriminators. Whereas these differences should be seen as riches. Whilst facing differences, we should acknowledge everybody as they are and respect their differences. Respecting people’s thoughts, lifestyles, views of life are a must in the first place for societal values. These differences shouldn’t be a reason for imposition, othering and end up into opression. People’s values, lifestyles, visions, beliefs, anticipations, tastes, perceptions and interpretations pof the World may differ. All of them represents the riches of life. Acknowledging, understanding the other and whatever his/her differences are, knowing that he/she also owns all the rights we do, elevates our humanist side and universality.
In a society where some masses want the others to be just like themselves and rejecting the others’ cultural heritage representing the differences is a menace towards societal values. In any society, all the people must live in equal conditions and rights. Every race is different yet all create a harmony like a rainbow when joined. We deserve living in a colorful World independent of race, language and religion. Respecting the differences..
