“Award winning cartoons selected!

12th International Don Quichotte Cartoon Contest “No to Violence Against Women!” This project is the scream of women from A to Z. It is the rebellion of women to the male dominant world. With Gaye Donay, Competition Partner, President of Istanbul Thought and Education Association; Sedef Tenim, International Communications Consultant; Elif Özer, Technical Assistant; all Members of the Pre-selection Committee and the Main Selection Committee consis of women. Our goal is to stop violence against women all over the world, to defend women’s rights and gender equality. 394 cartoonists from 62 countries have participated in our contest with a total of 1.040 cartoons. Pre-Selection Committee members, Farzana Vizier Tabor (Iran), Shirin Gholipo (Iran) and Asli Alpar (Turkey) have identified the 100 finalists out of 1.040 cartoons, with thorough examinations. The most important point in the qualifications is as follows: It’s been decided to give priority to the works that oppose violence, defend women’s rights and reflect the image of strong women, not violence against women. Our second announcement, a month before the competition’s end, has brought the related cartoons in. As a new application in our competiton, we have closed the signatures of the illustrators and numbered them. Because, in many competitions, we see that the selection committee members reward signatures rather than humor and art. We want to change this biased attitude. Yet, it’s also true that our selection committee as the are active artists of the cartoon world, would be able to guess the names though the styles, we would have at least prevented the signature to affect their initial decisions.

12. DON QUICHOTTE ULUSLARARASI KARİKATÜR YARIŞMASI’ 2020

KONU: “KADINA YÖNELİK ŞİDDETE HAYIR!”

(ORG: DON QUICHOTTE&ISTANBUL DÜŞÜNCE ve EĞİTİM DERNEĞİ)

Ödül Kazanan Karikatürler Belirlendi

12. Uluslararası Don Quichotte Karikatür Yarışması “Kadına Yönelik Şiddete Hayır de!” projesi A’dan Z’ye dünya kadınlarının çığlığıdır.

100 Finalist Cartoons are Selected!

12th International Don Quichotte Cartoon Contest "No to Violence Against Women!" This project is the scream of women from A to Z. It is the rebellion of women to the male dominant world. With Gaye Donay, Competition Partner, President of Istanbul Thought and Education Association; Sedef Tenim, International Communications Consultant; Elif Özer, Technical Assistant; all Members of the Pre-selection Committee and the Main Selection Committee consist of women. Our goal is to stop violence against women all over the world, to defend women’s rights and gender equality.

How 100 Finalist Cartoons are Selected?
Yet, it’s also true that our selection committee as they are active artists of the cartoon world, will be able to guess the names though the styles, we will at least prevent the signature to affect their initial decisions.

When Will the Awards be Determined?
The 100 Finalist cartoons will be posted in social media and on the Don Quichotte website for 2-3 weeks. Similar cartoons, claimed to be copies or stolen ones will be evaluated in this process and disqualified if necessary. Warnings and shares of such that come later, will not be taken into consideration. Towards the end of May, the Main Selection Committee will identify the cartoons that are worthy of an award out of the 100 Finalists. Due to the Coronavirus regulations, our competition program has been changed. Announced earlier as June 3rd Istanbul, the award ceremony and exhibition will be held later. Please follow us for the next announcement.

We would like to share our endless thanks to the cartoonists who have contributed to this international gender struggle and all who have supported this meaningful organization.

100 Finalist Karikatür Belirlendi!..

12. Uluslararasý Don Quichotte Karikatür Yarýþmasý"No To Violence Against Women!" projesi A’dan Z’ye dünya kadýnlarýnýn çýðlýðýdýr.

12th INTERNATIONAL DON QUICHOTTE CARTOON CONTEST’2020

Theme: Say NO to "violence against Women!"

We are taking on another global societal issue after covering child marriages. “Violence against Women” will be the theme of 12th Don Quichotte Caricature Contest.
Violenst against women and childs is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. Some national studies show that up to 70% of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime from an intimate partner. To raise awareness and trigger action to end this global scourge, the UNobserves International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November.
Unfortunately, violence against women and girls is deep-rooted in our societies and the international observance serves as a symbol of resistance as well as a call to action to eliminate gendered physical, economic and psychological violence. Violence against Women has been increasing in emerging countries. Femicide-killing women because of their gender-is a longstanding issue in the world. For example, there were 430 female homicides in 2019 alone in Turkey. Although illegal, child marriage in Turkey remains also prevalent along with countries such as India, Iran, Mexico, Ethiopia, Chad and Niger.
The purpose of this contest is to bring global awareness to this issue through the lens of caricaturists around the world and encourage solutions that will end this social crisis.

12. INTERNATIONALER DON QUICHOTTE KARIKATURENWETTBEWERB’2020

1st INTERNATIONAL “ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES” CARTOON CONTEST’2018

Subject: “Planet Calling SOS!”

Long before the dawn of the ecological movement in the 1970s, there were already many committed people and groups throughout the world concerned with the relationship between mankind and nature. They were worried about the dismissive way humans were handling nature and they reasoned about the consequences of this behaviour.

What has happened since then? Topics such as climate change, global warming, soil contamination, microplastics floating in the oceans, species extinction etc. are ever-present in our media and by now, everybody should at least have heard about those issues. Unfortunately, little has changed in the behaviours, neither of the individuals nor of societies. How come?

As early as 1972, the Club of Rome, an organisation of individuals who share a common concern for the future of humanity and strive to make a difference, predicted that if there was no awakening, the existing economical system would inescapably lead to a global ecological and economical collapse. They explained that causes and effects of human activities were often set wide apart in terms of time and space. Hence many can’t (or don’t want to) see the impact of their behaviour and simply deny responsibility.

This can’t go on any longer. Our planet is sending an “SOS”, making an emergency call. The Earth is in a critical situation and mankind is at a turning point. For instance, provided that all imaginable measures and precautions were taken, the ozone layer would still need at least 10 years to renew itself. If we are to believe recent research, the world population is expected to be 9 billion in 2050! If we fail to consume our energy and natural resources in a conscious and responsible way, sooner or later, life on our planet will become impossible.

Hence we are now calling upon all caricaturists in the world: Let’s draw our lines and warn the ones who can’t see the oncoming dangers! Let’s save our planet!

1. INTERNATIONALER “UMWELTPROBLEME” KARIKATURENWETTBEWERB’2018

Thema: "Der Planet ruft SOS!"

11th International Don Quichotte Cartoon Contest / 2018

Theme: “Child Brides“

Young girls who have not reached puberty are being forced to marry as child brides in some developing regions of the world. Child marriages are most common in India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania. Unfortunately, this issue is becoming more common in Turkey as well. Globally, every 1 out of 5 females who is under 18 years old is being forced into marriage in exchange for a dowry.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights prohibits child marriages and states that men and women of full age are entitled to equal marriage rights during marriage and at its dissolution. Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending parties. This statement does not specify the minimum age requirement unlike other conventions and it is subjective.
Globally, every 1 out of 5 females who is under 18 years old is being forced into marriage in exchange for a dowry.
Legislations and precautions that are already in place are not sufficient and non-government organizations have been heavily campaigning to increase awareness on this topic. The purpose of this competition is to bring awareness to child marriages around the world, to study and criticize this social phenomenon.

A Colorful Human World” International Cartoon Contest & Exhibition, Norway 2018
A Colorful Human World!

"It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair", Dickens wrote. Words, we recognize only too well. Or rather,
we instantly recognize the despair, seeing it in the eye of refugees, who travel across the sea in spite of the danger,
because staying would be infinitely more dangerous.
We see the refugees, who never make it to Europe, drowning in the attempt, and those who make it ashore,
only to be met with hate speech and the suspicion that they are extremists. Mainstream media are stimulating that populist speech,
which incites hate, while right wing parties everywhere in Europe are calling on the nation state and
closing of the borders to the exclusion of others. There is always some "other" to blame for everything.
In fact, our societies consist of many "others" at the risk of a situation of fracture in which everyone is made scared of one another.
Cartoonists have an important task at hand, and The International Cartoon Contest & Exhibition 2018 invites
all cartoonists to make us forget to be scared and find different ways of (re)connecting.
Cartooning at its finest is a spring of hope. It gives us ways to critically rethink and
find alternatives to bridge the "us" and "them". We get to see the human in the other.
Differences in culture or language are no longer too strange or too much to take in.
We see that differences are what make for a colorful world. We deserve to be living in a colorful human world and
The International Cartoon Contest & Exhibition 2018 invites all cartoonists to take part to make it a reality.

10th INTERNATIONAL DON QUICHOTTE CARTOON CONTEST / 2017

Theme: “Respect differences!“

Societies differ based on their language, religion and racial features. These features create the basics of the “differences” description. In such terms, we may not talk about equality since every body has a different color. Amongst crowds, these concepts are unfortunately referred as discriminators. Whereas these differences should be seen as riches. Whilst facing differences, we should acknowledge everybody as they are and respect their differences. Respecting people’s thoughts, lifestyles, views of life are a must in the first place for societal values. These differences shouldn’t be a reason for imposition, othering and end up into opression. People’s values, lifestyles, visions, beliefs, anticipations, tastes, perceptions and interpretations pof the World may differ. All of them represents the riches of life. Acknowledging, understanding the other and whatever his/her differences are, knowing that he/she also owns all the rights we do, elevates our humanist side and universality.

In a society where some masses want the others to be just like themselves and rejecting the others’ cultural heritage representing the differences is a menace towards societal values. In any society, all the people must live in equal conditions and rights. Every race is different yet all create a harmony like a rainbow when joined. We deserve living in a colorful World independent of race, language and religion. Respecting the differences..

The purpose of our contest is to underline the difference while showing its importance to societies and implement it through the cartoon art.

10. DON QUICHOTTE ULUSLARARASI KARIKATUR YARISMASI / 2017

Konu: "Farkliliga Saygi"

Dunya uzerinde yasayan toplumlar dil, din ve irksal ozelliklerine gore ayrisir. Bunlar "Farklilik" tanimini olusturan temel ozelliklerdir.

Farkliliklara saygi duyalim.

Bu yarismayi duzenlemekteki amacimiz, farkliligi irdeleyerek, toplumlarin yasamindaki onemini vurgulamak ve hayata gecirilebilmesine karikatur sanatiyla katkida bulunmaktir.

Yarisma Kosullari:

10. DON QUICHOTTE INTERNATIONALER KARIKATURENWETTBEWERB

Erdoðan Karayel’in uluslararasý baþarýsý..
Dünyanýn en ünlü sanatçýlarýný koleksiyonunda bulunduran DAIMLER ART COLLECTION, Erdoðan Karayel’in 3 çalýþmasýný koleksiyonuna aldý.
Karayel’in çalýþmalarýndan biri geçtiðimiz yýllarda Almanya’da iki eyalette ders kitaplarýnda kullanýlmýþtý.
"Don Quichotte" e-mizah dergisinin düzenlediði "Illegal Immigration" sergisinden seçme karikatürlerin yer aldýðý "Menschen auf Wegen und Fluchtwegen’ sloganýyla açýlacak olan uluslararasý sergide
Karayel’in yanýsýra 41 ülkeden 65 çizerin 100 çalýþmasý sergileniyor.

Erdogan Karayel’s International Success…
"Don Quichotte" to Exhibit His Works in "DAIMLER ART COLLECTION” which is one of the most prestigious art collections of the world…
In recent years, cartoonist and graphic artist Erdoðan Karayel has been performing well recognized events about refugees.
These events have recently grabbed the attention of DAIMLER AG (Mercedes).
The DAIMLER ART COLLECTION, holding the works of many well-known artists of the world, has added Erdoðan Karayel’s 3 works to the collection.
The institution has also decided to open up an international cartoon exhibition about refugees with Karayel’s curation.
The exhibition will be held in the beginning of May (09.05.2016) for 6 months at Untertürkheim/Daimler Congress Hall.
In recent years, one of Karayel’s creations has been included in the tutorial books of two provinces in Germany.
The international exhibition will consist of selected cartoons worldwide from "Don Quichotte" e-cartoon magazine’s "Illegal Immigration” exhibition with the slogan of "Menschen auf Wegen und Fluchtwegen’.
Besides Karayel, 65 cartoonists from 41 countries with 100 cartoons will be present at the exhibition.
Also, an exhibition leaflet with a cover consisting of Mr. Karayel’s work will be distributed
Mr. Karayel is the first Turkish Curator/ Artist whose work to be exhibited in DAIMLER AG’s art collection history.
Nejdet Niflioðlu, the manager of DAIMLER AG’s got a great merit in the realisation of the project. He regards this meaningful exhibition as a major success for cartoonists and the art of cartoon.
The essence of the exhibition is while expressing the global refugee tragedy through cartoons, to question the value given to humans on an international platform.

QUO VADIS EUROPE? / JOURNEY OF HOPE? …

Dear Cartoons Lovers,

We would like announce the title of the 9th DQ International Cartoons Contest as "Quo Vadis Europa?/Journey of Hope".
As we are all aware that in the Middle East, there’s a bloody war going on for years and no one knows when it will end. There is also the worldwide Syrian refugee crisis that adds up to millions of people and is still going on since 4 years. Most refugees try to land in Italy via Turkey and Greece in order to reach other European countries.
For some time now, the EU’s been applying immediate precautions and taking action against this major problem.
Unfortunately, some dark forces have started a "refugee trade" in order to take advantage of this tragedy.
Having sold everything they own due to ongoing war, Syrians flee ending up in a death voyage. As Germany having held its promise and has opened up its borders to millions of them, refugees have started flooding in. However, upon the opposition parties and society’s protests, reverse decisions are made and the immigration has been stopped.

One of the decisions made is to contribute 3 Billion Euros to Turkey in return of stopping this immigration. Thus, a form of "concentration camp” will be realized in Turkey in order to save Europe from the presence of refugees. Will this plan be successful? It is a big question mark for both Turkey and the European countries!
“Most of the Syrian refugees being Muslim and try to reach the Christian European countries instead of wealthy Muslim ones is another point to be considered. Positive and negative social reactions in Germany also lead us wondering how this situation will be reflected in other European countries. Unfortunately, while such decisions are made, the refugee trade is going on and new tragedies are under way every day.

The objective of the contest is holding a mirror to the states and societies to question themselves.
We have 3 questions:

These people…

3) Will they ever come back?

QUO VADIS EUROPA? / DER WEG IN DIE HOFFNUNG

Liebe Karikaturfreunde,

Juni 2016 veroffentlicht.

QUO VADIS EUROPA? / UMUDA YOLCULUK

Degerli Cizgi Dostlari…

2) Neden Avrupa’yi tercih ediyorlar?
3) Bir gun ulkelerine geri donecekler mi?

Yarisma Kosullari:
1)    Yarismaya sadece internet uzerinden quovadiseurope@donquichotte.org katilabilinir.
2)    Yarismaya katilacak karikaturlerin daha once hicbir yarismada odul almamis olmasi ve yayinlanmamis olmasi gerekmektedir. Aksi takdirde odulun geri alinabilmesi soz  konusu olabilecektir.

IRANLI KADIN KARIKATURCU ATENA FARGHADANI’YE OZGURLUK!..
Iran rejiminin kadinlarin dogum kontrol haplarini kisitlamasini karikaturleriyle elestirdigi icin tutuklanan Atena Farghadani icin sosyal medeyada #‎AtenaFarghadani hashtag’i ile ozgurluk kampanyasi baslatildi.
Karikaturunde yasayi cikan vekilleri hayvan figurlerine benzeten Atena, 2014 yilinin Agustos ayinda Devrim Muhafizlari tarafindan evine baskin yapilarak gozaltina alindi ve hemen ardindan tutuklandi.
Aralik ayinda serbest kalan Atena bu kez de hapishanede gordugu kotu muameleyi gundeme getirdigi icin tutuklandi. Hapishane kosullarini protesto etmek icin aclik grevine baslayan kadin karikaturist, subat ayinda kalp krizi gecirmesinin ardindan baska bir hapishaneye nakledildi ve grevini sonlandirdi. Atena’nin saglik durumu halen duzelmezken, su an Evin Cezaevi’nde tek kisilik bir hucrete tutulan Atena, avukatlari ve ailesi ile hala gorusturulmuyor.
Sosyal medya paylasimlarindan bazilari soyle:

PAINTER ATENA FARGHADANI IMRISONED FOR DRAWING A CARTOON IN IRAN!

e, including meeting the families of political prisoners and for posting on Facebook a cartoon she’d drawn that was critical of members of the Iranian parliament.
Iran is currently creating a law that will roll back women’s rights in the country by restricting access to contraception and criminalising voluntary sterilisation. Atena’s cartoon, which depicted politicians in favour of this Bill, is now being held against her – one of the charges she has been convicted of is ‘insulting members of parliament through paintings’.
While in prison last year, Atena flattened paper cups to use them as a surface to paint on. When the prison guards realised what she had been doing, they confiscated her paintings and stopped giving her paper cups. When Atena found some cups in the bathroom, she smuggled them into her cell. Soon after, she was beaten by prison guards, when she refused to strip naked for a full body search. Atena says that they knew about her taking the cups because they had installed cameras in the toilet and bathroom facilities – cameras detainees had been told were not operating.
Beaten in detention, punished for speaking out
Atena was released in November last year, but rearrested just six weeks later. In the time that she was released, she gave media interviews and posted a video on youtube describing how the prison guards had interrogated her for nine hours every day for six weeks. She said that female prison guards had beaten her and subjected her to degrading body searches.
Just weeks after posting her youtube video, Atena was once again arrested – possibly as reprisal for speaking out.
She was sentenced to 12 yeas and nine months on charges including
Gathering and colluding against national security
Spreading propaganda against the system
Insulting members of parliament through paintings
Insulting her interrogators
Atena is a prisoner of conscience – she has committed no real crime. She is being unfairly punished simply for exercising her right to free speech, association and assembly.
Hunger strike in protest at prison conditions
Atena was kept in solitary confinement for over two weeks when she was detained last year in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison. During that time she was denied access to her lawyer or family. After her release from detention, she said that she’d been beaten by prison guards.
Three weeks after she was rearrested in January this year, Atena went on hunger strike to protest that she was being held in extremely poor prison conditions, in a jail that does not have a section for political prisoners. Atena’s health suffered considerably as a result; her lawyer told us that the 28-year-old had suffered a heart attack and briefly lost consciousness in late February as a result of her hunger strike.
Atena has since been moved to another detention centre and stopped her hunger strike, but we remain worried about her health.
