WHO IS SUNA PEKUYSAL?

Born in 1933 in Ýstanbul, Pekuysal started her acting career in 1949, while she was still a student at the Ýstanbul Municipal Conservatory’s ballet and music department. Her first role was in an Ýstanbul Municipal Theater production of Kadri Ögelman’s “Artist Aranýyor”
(Artist Wanted). Three years later Pekuysal transferred to the drama department of the company
where she would perform for the next 54 years until her retirement in 1998.

Pekuysal’s most memorable role was in the 1980s hit Turkish musical comedy “Lüküs Hayat,” in which she played Zeynep the housemaid opposite another giant thespian, Zihni Göktay. The Ýstanbul Municipal Theater’s production of the musical, originally penned in 1933 by Ekrem Reþit Rey and set to music by his brother Cemal Reþit Rey, played to sold-out audiences for 14 years.

Göktay, who was one of Pekuysal’s close friends, apart from being co-workers who shared the same stage for 14 years, said prolific artists like Pekuysal are very rare, calling her “phenomenal.” “… She was an excellent comedian. Women comedians are so rare in Turkey that they come only once every 50 years. Suna Pekuysal was one of them,” Göktay said. Actor Erol Günaydýn said Pekuysal, her friend of 47 years, was inimitable. “Theater was her life. The end of her acting career meant the end of life for her,” Günaydýn said. Pekuysal will be buried Thursday following a memorial ceremony in the morning at Ýstanbul’s Fatih Theater.
