10 cartoonists from several countries proclaimed in 10 different languages, the city of Porto as “Capital of the Cartoon” following a proposal made under the scope of the X-PortoCartoon World Festival to the Porto City Hall.
The unveiling ceremony of a granite monument designed by Siza Vieira took place with the presence of the town councillor of Culture and important artists of the cartoon worldwide.
Gonçalo Gonçalves read a message from the President of the Porto City Hall, which highlighted the importance of the cartoon as “a way of artistic, media and cultural expression” considering cartoonists the “privileged interpreters” of reality.
The monument located at the top of Avenida dos Aliados, includes the cartoon of the Turkish Musa Gumus, winner of the Grand Prize of this festival 8th edition “Desertification and Land Degradation”. In this monument you can also be seen the scheme of the trophy designed by Siza Vieira and the inscription Porto Capital of the Cartoon.
The proclamation was read in 10 different languages. In German was read by the Presidente General of the Federation of the Cartoonists’Organizations (FECO), Marlene Pohle; in French, by George Wolinski; in Turkish by Muhittin Koroglu; in Spanish by the Colombian Harold Ortiz, in Galician by Xaquin Marin, in Korean by Taeyong Kang, in Esperanto by Edu Grosso, in Romanian was read by Radu Cletiu; into English by Ronaldo Cunha Days and in Portuguese by the cartoonist Onofre Varela.
Luis Humberto Marcos, director of PortoCartoon and the Portuguese Printing Press Museum said the proclamation was “a special moment for the museum and for the festival”, which is celebrating 10 years of existence. He also said that “Porto is a city that justifies the designation of Capital of the Cartoon”, and explained why: Porto “hás two from the oldest newspapers in Europe (one of them – O Primeiro de Janeiro – celebrates 140 years); at the end of the 19th century and early 20th , Porto had the humoristic newspaper, “O Sorvete” which was published for 24 years; Porto has the only Cartoon international gallery of the Iberian peninsula; has the only Cartoon Virtual Museum; and a festival that is celebrating a decade”.
George Wolinski, an important French cartoonist, and collaborator of publications such as the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo or the magazine Paris Match, and President to the International Jury of the PortoCartoon, referred to the PortoCartoon event as a “unique in the world”, saying that Portugal is still one of the few countries where there is “a great tradition of humour drawing”.
As per Marlene Pohle “the cartoon is not only an element of humour, but can also be used as a weapon against the negative things done by the politicians”.
The PortoCartoon-World Festival is considered by the FECO as one of the three most important cartoon contests in the world. Its exhibitions have been shown in the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Spain, France and Mexico, some of them more than once.
