I don’t usually complain but it is time for me to speak out. I am the second place winner of the Fourth International Cartoon Festival and Graphical Humor, Valle de Aburra, Colombia 2008. Theme: Women.

I found out the result through some international cartoon website since the organization had never contacted me. I had waited six months and written two letters to Universidad Autonoma Latinoamericana, the sponsor of the contest. In June 2009, I finally got a very apologetic email from the General Director, Mr. Jesus Orlando Morales Henao who stated that one of my prizes was a sculpture of a prestigious Colombian sculptor and a book about cartoon and graphical humor, which was on process of editing and would be published in October 2009. Again, I provided him my mailing address so that the prizes could be sent to me (Letter enclosed).

 

It has been almost two years. I emailed Mr. Mr. Jesus Orlando Morales Henao twice inquiring about the prized but again received no reply. Enough is enough. Winning a contest is a wonderful opportunity and recognition for us, cartoonists. We pour our hearts and souls in our works. We demand the respect and what is rightfully ours. Unfortunately, there are many Phantom Contests which exploit and contaminate our intellectual World. We, World’s Cartoonists are pleading for your help.

Yol ayrýmýnda bir ülkenin zengin çizgi dünyasý


Uzun bir süredir çalýþmalarýný aðýrlýklý olarak Almanya’nýn Stuttgart kentinde sürdüren karikatürist Erdoðan Karayel, bir süre önce Ýran’daki uluslararasý bir etkinlikte jüri üyesi olarak görev aldý. Düzenli olarak güncellediði "sanal" karikatür dergisi "Don Quichotte" (www.donquichotte.org) üzerinden Türk karikatürünün dünyayla yakýn iliþkiler kurmasýný saðlayan ve bu doðrultudaki çabalarýyla haklý bir üne kavuþan Karayel, sorularýmýzý yanýtlarken, Ýran karikatürü üzerine gözlemlerini, saptamalarýný aktardý. Çalýþkan sanatçýmýza göre, günümüz Ýran’ýna bakarken, abartýlardan uzak ve serinkanlý düþünülmesi gerekiyor.

YGA – Ýran’da ne için bulundunuz, neler yaptýnýz ve ne gibi gözlemleriniz oldu? Ýran toplumu ve karikatürü, sizce nasýl bir yolda?

ERDOÐAN KARAYEL – Sorunuzun yanýtýný vermeden önce sanýrým biraz Don Quichotte’u ve hedeflerini anlatmam gerekecek. "Don Quichotte" dergisi beþ yýl önce Stuttgart merkezli olarak yayýn hayatýna baþladý. Ancak koþullar gereði son dört yýldýr internet üzerinden e-mizah dergisi biçiminde Türk karikatürüyle dünya karikatürünü buluþturuyor. Bugüne deðin dört uluslararasý yarýþma gerçekleþtirdik. Almanya’nýn çeþitli eyaletlerinde ve Avrupa ülkelerinde de 30’a yakýn sergi açtýk.

Ýnternet üzerinden geniþ bir yelpazeye ulaþmýþ durumdayýz. Hemen her ülkenin karikatürcü veya dernekleriyle baðlantýlarýmýz var. Dünya karikatüründe "Don Quichotte"un oldukça önemli bir yeri olduðunu rahatlýkla ve övünerek söyleyebilirim. Ýnternet kanalýyla geçtiðimiz yýllarda yapýlan uluslararasý bir ankette, "irancartoon"un ardýndan dünyanýn ikinci en çok izlenen karikatür web sitesi seçildiðini de unutmadan belirteyim.

Uluslararasý baðlantýlarýmýz böylesine güçlü olunca, 2008 yýlýndan itibaren dünya karikatürüne yön veren Ýran, Brezilya, Azerbaycan, Suriye ve Çin karikatürcüleriyle köklü yakýnlýklar kurduk. Düzenlenen uluslararasý yarýþmalarda jüri olarak birlikte görev aldýk. Özellikle uzun bir süreden beri hayranlýkla izlediðim Ýran karikatürünün büyük ustasý ve "irancartoon"un da yönetmeni Massoud Shojai ile güzel bir çizgi dostluðu kurduk. 2008 yýlýnda ilk kez gittiðim ve 2 gün kaldýðým Tahran’dan sonra geçtiðimiz yaz Kýbrýs’ta yine birlikte ayný jüride görev aldýk. 2009 yýlýnda aralýk ayýnda bu kez Tahran Karikatür Bienali’ne davet edildim. Tahran merkezli yürütülen organizasyonda benim dýþýmda Ýspanya’dan Omar F. Turcios ve Nani, Brezilya’dan Marcio Leite, Çin’den Liuyi Wang ve Türkiye’den Þevket Yalaz da yer aldýlar.

Jüri üyesi olarak görev aldýðým bu etkinlik tam 10 gün sürdü. Bu dönemde Ýran’ý ve Ýran halkýný daha yakýndan tanýma fýrsatýný buldum. Zengin Pers kültürüne sahip Ýran’da görsel sanatlarýn bu denli baþarýlý olmasýna þaþmamak lazým. Özellikle Ýsfahan gezisinde gördüðümüz tarihi camiler, medreseler ve binalardaki hat sanatlarý ve el iþçiliðine dayanan eserler, gerçekten görülmeye deðerdi. Saðlam bir desenden oluþan ve özgün renk dünyasýný yansýtan eserlerin her biri paha biçilemeyecek kadar deðerli. Ýran karikatürünün bu denli baþarýlý olmasýnýn ardýnda zengin "Pers kültürü" mirasýnýn yattýðý gerçeðini, ülkeyi gezdikçe ve tanýdýkça daha iyi anlýyorsunuz.

Ýran karikatürünün dünyada plastik ve estetik açýdan bu denli baþarýlý olmasýnýn ardýnda yatan bir baþka gerçek de, sanýrým ülkenin dýþ dünyaya kapanmýþ olmasýnda. Ülkede özellikle Amerikan hegemonyasýna karþý büyük bir tepki var. Ekonomik ve siyasal açýdan Rusya ve Çin ile de özel bir yakýnlýk söz konusu. Ülkede var olan rejimin de katkýsý olsa gerek, insanlarýn sanata yönelmesi, tepkilerini ve dileklerini bu yolla dile getirmeleri sanatý daha da etkin ve yetkin bir konuma getiriyor. Ýranlý karikatürcülerin çoðu, sanki karikatür çizmiyor da tuvale resim yapýyor. Bu açýdan, özellikle benim için, iran karikatürünün dünya karikatüründe çok önemli bir yeri var. Bazý çalýþmalara gýpta ile bakmamak elde deðil. Onlarýn etkisi altýnda kalmýþ olmamdan mýdýr nedir, bilemiyorum, ama son yýllarda çizdiðim karikatürlerde özel bir estetik çaba sarf ediyorum. Ve sonrasýnda karþýsýna geçip seyretmek inanýlmaz keyif veriyor…

YGA – Ýran’da kurduðunuz baðlantýlardan sonra ve geleceðe dönük olarak, bu ülkedeki sanatçýlarla birlikte ne gibi iþler çýkarmayý düþünüyorsunuz?

ERDOÐAN KARAYEL – Þu anda baþta Massoud Shojai olmak üzere, Bahram Azimi, Shahram Rezai, Saeed Sadeghi, Bahram Arjmandia, Shahrokh Heidari, Kiarash Zandi gibi tanýnmýþ karikatürcülerle kurduðum dostluk ve çizgi beraberliði, bu ülkeyle olan baðlantýlarýmýn asla kopmamasýný saðlayacak en önemli nedenlerim…

Özellikle "irancartoon" yöneticisi Massoud Shojai ile uluslararasý birçok etkinlikte birlikte yer alacaðýmýzý þimdiden rahatlýkla söyleyebilirim. Son ziyaretimde "brazilcartoon" yönetmeni Marcio Leite, "irancartoon" yönetmeni Massoud Shojai, Çin AYACC yönetmeni Liuyi Wang ile yaptýðýmýz prensip anlaþmasýna göre, dörtlü olarak birçok uluslararasý etkinlikte birlikte yer alacaðýz. Üç ülke karikatürünün arasýnda "Don Quichotte"un da yer almasý, beþ yýldan bu yana sürdürdüðümüz özverili ve baþarýlý çalýþmalarýmýzýn bir ürünü olsa gerek. Böylesi büyük bir misyonun lokomotifi olmak, tüm yorgunluða raðmen, inanýlmaz bir keyif ve mutluluk veriyor.

YGA – Siz Avrupa’da yaþayan bir Türk karikatüristi olarak dünya karikatürüyle gerçekten sýký baðlar kurmayý baþardýnýz. Sizce, Batý karikatürü ile Ýran karikatürü arasýnda ne gibi bir paralellik veya benzemezlik var?

ERDOÐAN KARAYEL – Dünya karikatürü bir yol ayrýmýnda sanki. Çizgiye ve espriye dayanan karikatür son dönemlerde yerini plastik deðeri yüksek olan ve espriyi ikinci plana iten "illüstratif" bir kimliðe bürünüyor gibi. Karikatür adýna pek sýcak bakmadýðým bu "takýntý", umarým en kýsa zamanda yerini "az ve öz çizgi"ye býrakýr.

Ýran karikatürüne baktýðýmýzda, daha önce sözünü ettiðim gibi Pers kültüründen gelen bir estetik anlayýþý hakim. Bu tarz ve üslubu Polonya, Brezilya ve Romanya gibi Balkan ülkelerinde de görebiliyoruz. Özellikle portre aðýrlýklý çalýþmalara yönelen Ýran karikatüründe, sansürün olmadýðýný söyleyemeyiz. Özellikle siyasi karikatürlere neredeyse hiç rastlanmýyor. Son dönemlerde yaþanan iç karýþýklýk, Cumhurbaþkaný Ahmedinejad’ý hedef alan karikatürlerin yasaklanmasýna, bazý çizerlerin ceza almasýna uzanan bazý yaptýrýmlar görmek mümkün. Ancak, karikatüre asla tolerans göstermeyen ve karikatürcülere açtýðý davalarýn sayýsýný unutan bir baþbakana sahip Türkiyemiz sanki bu açýdan Ýran’a göre daha çok mu hoþgörülü?

YGA – Dinin ana çimento olarak kullanýldýðý bir toplum yapýsýna sahip Ýran. Baskýcý bir siyasal rejim olarak tanýmlanabilecek olan bu ülkede, karikatür ne gibi yollar, diller arýyor? Karikatürün böyle bir rejimde ve toplumda ne gibi bir iþlevi olabilir?

ERDOÐAN KARAYEL – Karikatür öyle bir sanat ki, baský ve sansür onu daha da yüceltiyor ve deðerini arttýrýyor. Çünkü daha çok düþünüyorsunuz, araþtýrýyorsunuz. Ýlk akla geleni çizmiyor, yasal sýnýrlarýnýzý zorlayarak, en çarpýcý ve en mükemmele konuþlanýyorsunuz. Bu da beraberinde baþarýyý getiriyor þüphesiz. Türkiye gibi bir ülkede karikatürden ceza alan karikatürcüleri düþündüðümüzde, Ýran’daki karikatürcülere yönelik baský ve sansüre hiç þaþmamak gerekir, kanýsýndayým.

Ýran gerçekten de bir yol ayrýmýnda.. Gelecekte daha özgür, insan haklarýný uygulayan bir toplum olma yolunda diyebilirim. Bunu oradaki gözlemlerimden hareketle söylüyorum. Eðer bir ülkeye televizyon, bilgisayar ve cep telefonu gibi günümüz dünyasýnýn vazgeçilmez iletiþim araçlarý girmiþse, bazý sonuçlarýn kaçýnýlmaz olduðunu kabul etmemiz gerekiyor. Ve tabii Ýranlý politikacýlarýn da…

YGA – Ýranlý karikatürcü nasýl biri? Neler düþünür, neler arar, toplumuyla ve Batý dünyasýyla iliþkisi ne düzeydedir? Son gözlemlerinizin ýþýðýnda bir resim verebilir misiniz?

ERDOÐAN KARAYEL – Ýranlý karikatürcü özellikle çok iyi bir desene ve fantastik bir beyine sahip. Estetik kaygýlarý miras aldýðý Pers kültürünü bugün olabildiðince hayata geçirmeye çalýþýyor. Ýnsan iliþkilerinde en az bizler kadar sýcak ve içtenler. Tebriz gibi bazý kentlerde Azeri kökenli Türkçe bilen karikatürcülerin varlýðýný öðrenmem, baþka bir mutluluk nedeni oldu. Ýranlý karikatürcünün tüm meslektaþlarý gibi azla yetinmeyen ve sýnýrlarý zorlayan özelliðini de bilmem tekrarlamaya gerek var mý? Tabii ki her gün televizyon ve internetten gördüðü dünya ile kendi dünyasýný karþýlaþtýrdýðýnda bir þeylerin eksikliðini veya yanlýþlýðýný en çabuk kavrayan ve tepki gösteren de o…

Konuya biraz da genel açýdan bakacak olursak: Ülkedeki rejim ne olursa olsun, kaðýdý ve kalemini önüne alan her karikatürcü özgürdür. Ancak karikatürünü çizdikten sonra ne yazýk ki onun özgür olup olmayacaðýna o karar veremiyor. Bu da sadece Ýranlý karikatürcülerin deðil hepimizin sorunu. Sonuçta hangi ülkede yaþarsanýz yaþayýn, karikatürcü özgür deðil. Ve asla politikacýlar bizleri sevmiyor. Bazen düþünüyorum da "Keþke ülkeleri karikatürcüler yönetseydi!" diye hayýflanýyorum. "Daha mý iyi olurdu, yoksa daha mý kötü olurdu?"yu düþünmeyi de sizlere býrakýyorum.

It is an irony of life that often a lesser man, by well-planned orchestration, is installed on pedestals, while one really talented unfortunately gets a silent burial. Through passage of time, layers of dust gradually settle over what that brilliant man had achieved with dedication during his life-time and eventually the image of that man and his work, though deserving to be treasured, are permanently consigned to oblivion. Such has been the fate of late Sri Purna Chandra Rath, whose multi-dimensional genius could not fully blossom as Myeloid Leukemia (Blood Cancer) claimed him prematurely at the young age of 43. Within a brief span of about 12 years of creative life, he could accomplish a lot in cultural, social and political spheres by sheer will-force and organizational capability. Despite infrastructural deficiencies, financial constraints and geographical obstacles prevailing at his time, he over-stretched his energies to see his dreams come true. In the process, he untimely perished like a ‘Candle burning at both ends’. (more :- pcrath )

 

In remembrance of this Eminent Historian, P.C. Rath Memorial Trust invites cartoons from both professional and amateur cartoonists of the world.

Rules:

3. ABOUT THE CARTOON:

A) Only one unpublished Cartoon is to be sent as e-mail attachment. (Don’t send previously awarded cartoon

B) The Entry Form (in MSWord) must accompany the cartoon as attached mail.

C) Size: 21 x 30 cm (A-4)

D) Cartoon should be in JPG format (strictly 100dpi) (Maximum 1MB).

E) Every cartoon should accompany a certificate from the cartoonist with full signature (Scanned) about the originality and non-publication. The committee may ask the cartoonist to provide the signed original/sketch (Incase of digital art works) after their selection for exhibition/diploma.

8. RIGHTS OF THE ORGANIZER:

 

A) Once sent the works belong to the organizing committee. It can be published, distributed or used for promotional purpose in future.

 

B) Cartoons should be downloadable and clear. Committee would not be responsible in situations like net-failure, undownloadable cartoon etc. It is therefore advised to keep the file small.

 

B) The entries can also be made available in other publications by the committee.

 

C) Plagiarism, if noted, the entry will be summarily rejected or even the diploma would be withdrawn, if awarded.

 

D) In case of a dispute the decision of the Committee would be final. The committee reserves all rights to cancel or modify any of the rules/conditions.

 

Participants are considered to have accepted all the conditions and are aware that their submissions may be reprinted and used without future monetary compensation.

2010 "RED MAN" INTERNATIONAL CARTOON CONTEST–PRIZE OF LOVE

 

Disasters are striking the whole world again and again. The big earthquakes from time to time not only shocked the earth, but also shocked people’s hearts in the meantime. Recently big earthquakes struck Haiti, Chile, China and some other countries. Disasters including flood in Brazil, snow disaster in America, draught disaster in southwest China and volcanic eruption in Iceland…happened one by one. Greenhouse effect brings more and more suffering to human beings. The earth is a big village and we are all the villagers. Let us devote our love, pray for the sufferers and bless them. Wish less disasters and more happiness to our earth!

 

China Redman Center is always devoting itself to the public welfare. In the spring of 2008, Redman Center donated some books to the children in the mountain area in Qinghai Province, China. Teachers from Beijing University who went Qinghai to support the education took the books there to help the primary school to build the library. Recently, the earthquake happened in Qinghai pulled our hearts strings. We sincerely hope the children there are safe, healthy and tide the difficulty. In 2009, Redman Center designed the annuals for a Chinese charity without any charges. Our behavior is also supported by our coteries. In 2008, Mr.Quan Yingsheng from Heavy Comics denoted 20 cartoon books to us. We really appreciate his almsteed. One person’s ability is limited. If everyone can denote his love, the world will be much nicer.

 

 

Regulation

 

1. The contest is Open to all artists worldwide: cartoonists, caricaturists, painters, illustrators, etc. No limitation on the nationality, age, sex or occupation.

 

2. Theme : DISASTER (earthquake, flood, drought and snow disaster, etc.)

 

3. Entries: unlimited

 

4. Size of the paper works is unlimited while the minimum size of the electronic works should be A4 and the resolution should be no less than 350dpi.

 

5. Technique and medium of works are unlimited. Traditional Chinese Painting, Oil painting, Print, Watercolor or Children’s painting are all acceptable. Black and white or in colors.

 

6. The works whether they have been awarded in other contests previously will be accepted.

 

7. First name, Last name, Address, Email, Telephone number should be submitted together works. Or the author’s entry-form and biography are needed.

 

8. Deadline for entries is July 7, 2010.

 

9. The works must be original. The authors should have full copyright and be responsible for all the legal responsibilities related to the productions copyright. The Foundation will not be responsible for any damage that may occur during postage and handling.

 

10. Whether paper works or electronic works are accepted.

 

11. Prizes:

 

PRIZE: Award + Medal + Catalogue

 

12. Excellent works will have the excess to the "2010 The 3rd "RED MAN" INTERNATIONAL CARTOON & HUMOUR CONTEST" contest and will be selected into the catalogue. Cartoonist whose works are selected will get a copy for free. Committee has the rights to use any of the participated works in a brochure, on posters, in the world press or other printed matter. In these cases, any fee for the use of works will not be paid.

3rd INTERNATIONAL CARICATURE CONTEST FESTIVAL “HUMOREIX” LLEIDA

RULES OF 3rd INTERNATIONAL CARICATURE CONTEST FESTIVAL "HUMOREIX" LLEIDA (ASSOCIACIÓ DE COMERCIANTS DE L’EIX AND HUMORÀLIA)

1. Any artist, amateur or professional, can participate in this competition, as it is a competition which is open internationally.

2. The competition theme is: "Caricatures Singers or famous Musicians."

3. Only one original piece of work will be accepted from each participant. The piece must be original, not have won any prizes in previous competitions or have been published anywhere else. Any pieces which are considered, according to the criteria of the judges, to be similar in any way to other well known artwork will be disqualified immediately.

4. Artwork can be executed using any pictorial technique within a maximum scale of A3 (420 x 297mm) or a scale which is proportional to this. Digitally formatted work will also be accepted. In this case the work must have a resolution of 300ppi and be presented in JPG or JPGE format.

5. If any text is present in the work it must be translated into Spanish or Catalan.

6. Artwork must be presented within a sealed envelope together with the details of the participant (name, surname, address, nationality, telephone number, email address, etc). Work can also be sent by email to the following address: eix@eixcomerciallleida.com (Eix Comercial), with the participant’s details in another document attached to the same email. It is advisable for artwork that is not digital to be colour photocopied and hand signed. All original artwork will be returned to the artist once the competition has finished.

7. The final admissions date for artwork is 7 May 2010.


8. From 12 May 2010 artwork will be exhibited in the shops that are members of the Association of the Lleida Eix Comercial (Shopping District), and will be duly labelled. Prior to this a panel of specialist judges will be convened, formed by one representative of Humoralia, another from the Shopping District and two professionals who will judge the 200 best entrees, which will be exhibited. These artworks will also be exhibited on the Eix Comercial (Shopping District) Association website. The judges reserve the right to declare the prize null and void if the quality of the originals is insufficient or if there is little or no public interest.

9. The artist is obliged to give up all image copyrights for the artwork presented for its publication and exhibition, both physical and digital. Once the work has been judged and finalized it will be returned to the artist. The organization pledges not to use images of the winning piece, or any other award winning pieces, without prior permission from the artist. Moreover, the organization will take full responsibility for the originals from the moment they are received until the finalization of the competition.The organization promises to inform the contestants of the reception and acceptance of the participating artwork via email or publication on the Eix website

10.One prize only of €1,500 will be awarded to the winning entry.

11. The verdict will be decided by public vote over the Internet using the Shopping District’s website in a first phase. Only allowed one vote per person. In a second phase, a qualified Jury composed by representatives persons of the Commercial Association "Eix" and Humoràlia will decide between the 3 most popular votes, wich was the winner. The judges’ decision will not be open to appeal.

12. The verdict will be released during the 11 and 12 June 2010

13. Participation in the competition means the acceptance of all terms and conditions. Any doubts or problems that may arise during this time will be dealt with by the organization through a memo to its members.
